The Weeknd

My experience with The Weeknd

I discovered The Weeknd through D'angelo Wallace's review of his album After Hours. After hearing a track by track rundown of the story behind the project, I decided to give it a listen. It was amazing. Everything from the project's eerie, 80's inspired atmosphere, to the lyrics, to the production. It was nothing like anything I'd heard before. That same night, I listened to Dawn FM, my favorite album of Abel's, and watched some of the music videos.

Why I love The Weeknd

Abel's music is some of the coolest stuff I've ever heard. It's so distinctively his. I can recognize his voice almost immediately. My favorite project of his, Dawn FM, is especially unique, leaning even further into 80's synth pop than it's predecessor does. It takes place in a disco purgatory after the character of The Weeknd dies in After Hours, and follows him as he pays for the actions he took in relationships during his last life. The album shows a different side of Abel, both as a writer and a person, by putting him on the other end of his own toxicity. It also has some of the best production of any Weeknd project, featuring artists like Max Martin and OPN.
