Doki Doki Literature Club!
Doki Doki Literature Club (commonly abbreviated as "DDLC") is a 2017 visual novel created by Team Salvato. The game follows a boy who joins his school's literature club with his friend, Sayori. There, he meets the other three charaters: Monika, Yuri, and Natsuki. The game starts off as a dating simulator, but later spirals into psychological horror.
My experience with DDLC!
Doki Doki Literature Club was the first horror game I ever played. I'm typically not interested in horror media, but I'd been hearing about this game since i was a little kid, and decided it'd be interesting to finally check it out. I remember putting rose quartz and amethyst crystals under my pillow the night after I first played, because I KNEW I was going to have nightmares. But I LOVED the game. It was such a unique experience, and made me feel emotions no other game ever had before. I started watching YouTube videos about theories on the game, analyses of the poetry, and long playthroughs (including an amazing one by therapist and content creator Euro Brady). As I did, I grew more emotionally attatched to the characters, and the game itself.
Why I love DDLC!
DDLC made me think of fictional characters and media completely differently. I'd never even considered the idea that there could be a game like this before. It made me reconsider the possibilities for my own characters and creative projects. I've also analyzed this game through a feminist lens (which you can find on my youtube channel), and find it to be a genius look at tropes and stereotypes placed on female characters. I think it does an incredible job of satirizing these tropes through its horror.
Thank you for being a part of my literature club!
